Screaming Parrott

Hello everyone, please help I am going crazy!! Have a Yellow Nape Amazon he is now 12 years old. Have had him since he was a baby. We feed him all kinds of seeds, nuts fruits and vegetables, we rotate his toys in cage, we let him out everyday to play, we even got him a play mate an African Grey which he loves, yet he will scream for no reason at all. We are talking a piercing screech of screaming constantly for minutes at a time and nothing will shut him up. I do not know what else to do, this began about four years ago and it is increasing on daily basis. Does anyone else have this problem We have 4 birds one cat and one dog , for us this is a lifetime commitment.

Parrots scream. It is part of their natural makeup and one of the most common reasons why people give them up. Usually, they are more active and vocal early in the morning and late in the evening (same time they feed). Noises set them off, a loud TV or radio, a car honking, a dog barking, a blender, people screaming or fighting, etc. There are ways that can help control the screaming but you will never completely get rid of it. And, most likely, the reason why he only started doing it 4 years ago is because he was a baby before and he is now a sexually mature bird. Tell mine to shut up (do not scream at him, though, it makes it worse) if he doesn’t do it, ‘punish’ him by sending him into his cage (he should do this on command). Once he’s in the cage, close the door and wait to see what happens, if he continues doing it, cover the cage and leave him in darkness until he stops, but, you have to make sure that you never let him in the cage once he has stopped screaming and that you always give him love and a treat, afterward. It will take time (it would have been easier if you had not waited so long) but parrots are incredibly intelligent animals and he will catch on real soon.
Good luck!
