I think the first thing would be to look for whether or not th dog is social, friendly etc.  The rest of it would depend on your lifestyle and how you envision the pet in your family.  If your family is active and you want your dog to participate, then that would be good for one kind of dog, if you live in an apartment, that would be good for another.  If you have children, another.   It's all personal preference and lifestyle.  I have adopted several dogs from shelters over the years and I have never gone wrong.  They have all been amazing animals!  I highly recommend it!
