Large, old rabbit

A friend had to move unexpectedly and left her rabbit with me and my two roommates. I'm not sure of the species, but he is remarkably large (I haven't been able to pick him up, so I can't give a good estimate) and mostly gray with speckled white. He's also evidently around 10 years old, which I understand is very old for a rabbit.

Anyways, I just wanted to check if there's anything in particular I should know about rabbits to make sure I take good care of him. He's been very skiddish, (I think he's extremely stressed by the sudden move) and didn't eat or drink much for the first day or two, which had me worried. He also seemed to tense up and hyperventilate when I would pet him. In addition to his pellets, I fed him lettuce and carrots by hand to make sure he was hydrated and build some trust. He's finally moving around more freely, and eating and drinking what seem to be a reasonable amount. He's also more comfortable around me in general, but does seem a little anxious when I make physical contact. He also will sometimes growl or pounce when I try to clean up around him, so he's a bit territorial.

My big question is this: he's never had a cage before (I think), and was previously trained to use a litter box. I think previous owner gave him a lot of drugs, (I think the poor guy isn't really not psychologically all there anymore) and he eventually stopped doing using the box. We've ordered a cage, and until then, we've turned our kitchen into a pen. My question is this: does anyone have experience with rabbits with this problem, and does it seem practical to retrain him? I'd really love to let him roam as much as possible, but it doesn't seem practical if he can't use the litter box. Does anyone have any techniques for training?
