Cat is lethargic

Hi,

My two year old male cat is not acting like himself. He normally runs through the house, especially after using the litter box, and love chasing flies.

However, the last several days, he's just been sleeping and laying around like an old dish rag. He has no energy and I've even had to bring him his food and water because he lacks the energy to stand at his food dish.

The good news is, he is eating the food and drinking, and still using the litter box.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Can you try taking his temperature to make sure that he is not running a fever??

The symptoms your kitty is experiencing point to a wide range of problems. How is his stool? Is he an indoor only kitty? Urinating okay??

Do you have air conditioning in your home, and if not, are you in the middle of a heat wave?  Everyone in my household -- cats, dogs, humans -- laid around like dish rags during those last few weeks when temps were in the mid-90's outside and closer to 100 inside.

Thanks for the quick responses. It is cooler than it has been. We don't have a kitty thermometer, but I could get one. Do you know what  a cat's normal body temperature is?

Thanks again!

It sounds like your cat could be running a fever.  There are so many possiblilities.  If he doesn't improve in a day or two, I would suggest taking him to the vet.  One of my cats had a bad reaction to a shot one time and she laid under our bed and would not let me touch her.  I noticed it wasn't her usual self so I called the vet and sure enough she had a fever.   Cats do not show sickness the same way as a dog.  So if you suspect something isn't right with your cat, there is a good chance that he could be sick.

You can purchase a digital rectal thermometer to take the cats' temp.  Normal temperature ranges anywhere from 100.5 to 102.5 F.  If your cat is running a fever, and it's been cooler outside and still lethargic, then I would make an appointment with your vet.

He's starting to cough now too, so I guess a trip to the vet is in order.

Thanks everyone! Wink

Yes, it definetly sounds like a vet trip is in order. Possibly some sort of upper respiratory infection?? You can also use a regular mercury therometer to take your kitty's temp, but if you are going to take your kitty to the vet soon anyway, then I suppose you won't need to worry about it.

I hope your kitty gets better soon! It's always worrying when their behavior isn't normal.

Definitely get it checked out by a vet, and I'm sure everything will get itself sorted out.

Hi everyone.

My cat is home from the vet. He is running a fever and he's been given an antibiotic. He has an upper respitory infection and conjunctivitis. He has to take a pill every 12 hrs. for the next 2 weeks. He also has to have cream put in his affected eye every day for one week.

Thanks everyone who offered expertise and advice. You were right on the money!

He's doing a lot better. He's now like his old self, running and raising hell!  Cheesy
