My baby tortoise won't eat??

I have had my baby sulcata tortoise for almost a week now. He will not eat his tortoise food or green leafy vegetables. I get him to drink only by placing him daily in his water dish. He has had one bowel movement that I know of since I have had him. Does anyone know why he is not eating?

Do you have a vet that could look at him?

There could be numerous reasons he is not eating..including improper lighting, diet, etc...where did you get him from?  Was he eating before you got him?  Might be best to call a vet and have him looked at.

We have had turtles in our family for many years and one thing that I have always noticed is that they go through stages where they won't eat anything or very little of anything for long periods of time and then all of a sudden they eat continuously. The winter time seems to be when their eating slows down considerably.Probably has something to do with hibernating. I use to worry about it but over the years I have come to see it as a normal part of their lives.

You must be right about the hybernation thing, because during winter, turtles(I beleive, i'm not much of an expert when it comes to turtles), will hide in the mud on the bottom of the river and wait for spring.  They probably are eating a lot after that to recuperate and to stock up for next winter.

They do tend to eat less in the winter time...my turtle does the same thing.  The only concern here is it's a brand new turtle and  young...hasn't really had many bowel movements and not eating.  In that situation I think a vet check may be in order just to determine that this is a normal for this turtle and not a health issue.  If they had the turtle for a while and knew that it was healthy..then it may not be as big of a concern.
