Our kitty has ear problems?

Hello.

Our new kitten has always scratched behind her ears, ever since we got her. Lately she's been scratching a bit more. She's been to the vet and everything, and on her very first vet visit, she had clean ears.

I recently was petting her, and found something rough behind her ears. I pulled out some loose hair, and with it came tiny black crumbs.

I'm not sure what it is, if it's the reason she's scratching, but has anyone had this problem with their cats? What can I do?

It sounds like it may be fleas. Behind the ears is a common place for fleas to hide out and the black crumbs you described sound like flea dirt (feces). Also, fleas and flea dirt, commonly cause hair to fall out in large clumps. Do you have your kitty on a flea preventative?

I would agree with Redfire. Sounds like you have a flea problem. My kitties had the same sort of thing. We now have them on a vet prescribed flea preventative.

Sounds like fleas.  A flea preventative would be great (such as Frontline)..but you are also going to have to take care of your house as there are microscopic flea eggs present that can and will hatch.  Therefore vacumming your entire home (and throwing away the bag if you use one), washing all bedding/blankets especially where the cat likes to sleep.

You won't always see the actual flea..but as redfire stated, what you are describing sounds like flea dirt. This is the feces of the flea.  To check you could take some of that flea dirt and put it on a damp white paper towel.  Flea dirt will have a reddish ring around it (when on the papertowel) as it contains blood.  Regular earth dirt will not.

Please do not buy on the shelf flea treatment...hertz especially. A lady I work with put hertz flea preventative on her cats and they were both on iv's, lithargic..the whole shabang. Her vet bill is a couple thousand dollars.

I believe you mean Hartz.  Yes, it is dangerous, as are any of the ones you get OTC.  This year there seems to be a huge problem with FL not working but there are others your vet can recommend.   Revolution does everything including ear mites.

If your cats are outdoor I would recommend revolution, but if not, frontline is number one on my list.

If she has been checked for everything, I would take her back to the vet to be certain of what it is before treating it.  Check her for fleas first,  even if she is on flea treatment.  You never know when one will sneak on her.

Try using a mite preventative in her ears.
